How to make a skirt for your new doll

So you bought (or made) a new doll and want to give it a change of clothes? Here is an easy tutorial on how to create a basic skirt without much fuss.

You will need:
Basic sewing skills
Fabric
Pinking Shears (scissors that cut at a zig zag) or Serger
Small piece of elastic (at least the length of your dolls waist measurement)
Sewing machine or needle and thread
Safety Pin
Straight Pins

Start out by measuring your dolls body. You can do this with the fabric or a measuring tape if you have one. Double that measurement and cut a rectangle of fabric that width and about an inch longer than you want the skirt to be. You should either use your pinking shears or serge the edges so they wont fray.

Next, fold up the bottom edge of the fabric about and eighth of an inch, press and sew in place. This creates your bottom hem. Then fold your top edge down a little wider than the elastic you are going to use. Press and sew into place. The red lines indicate the folds.

Now take a safety pin and pin your elastic. Run the elastic through the casing you made in the previous step. When you get to the end of the elastic, pin it to the edge of the skirt casing with a straight pin. Continue to pull the elastic through until the safety pin comes out the opposite end.

Fold your fabric RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER and pin in place. Sew or serge the ends together.

Stretch your waistband so the gathering is even and voila, you've got a new skirt for your dolls!
